Tis the season to eat! I love Christmas but why I love it so much is because of all the delicious food I get to make, share and ultimately eat!
So it only seems fitting that I will introduce Mateo to solids at Christmas! Well and because I think he is ready. They (nurses, world health organization) say to start at 6 months. Some people listen some don't. I usually listen to the people I trust the most. One of the public health nurses said the British have a campaign called "no rush to mush". Basically start your baby when they are ready, most health providers agree they are ready at 6 months. Now my child have been a couple if months ahead of the game. He rolls front to back, back to front, pivots, holds his body up and is already sitting up with no help for short intervals. So I think start solids a little early (a couple of weeks) is ok.
The nurse suggested starting with steamed broccoli and letting him play with it, bring it to his mouth on his own and get the feel and enjoyment of eating. Also have him eat with us. So he learns that eating is social and that we do it together. So what better time to start then Christmas?
We are hosting Christmas this year and will be sitting around the table a lot. I want him to be included in that.
I will admit I am a little nervous to introduce food for a couple of reasons.
1. Breastfeeding - I have heard of moms that have dried up because the baby isn't nursing as much or babies that wean themselves and are no longer interested. Now that breastfeeding is easy I love doing it and honestly not ready to stop.
2. Poops - from what I have heard poops change drastically, they stink and they are messy! Or can be. Also babies, especially breastfeed babies can easily get constipated, causing a whole new challenge.
3. Over feeding - Mateo is a big boy. He he loves the boob and I suspect he will love food! I have been told over and over you can't over breastfeed but I know you can over feed. So the fact that he tops the charts now from simply breast milk I can't imagine what he'll be like on solids.
Regardless of my nerves, I am going to start solids. Mateo is interested in food, he watches us eat and licks his lips and curls them into the mmmmm position. He loves pickles! But that could be the teething too, haha!
